Dirty Pretty Things

A few days ago, it was announced that Carl's new band goes by the name of... quelle surprise... "Dirty Pretty Things". The band has already played a few Italian dates, one of which (Padova DNA Club, Oct 11) was bootlegged and can be downloaded here or at albionarks.com. Thanks once again to Manuel for the "hint".

Meanwhile, Carl's club night is next going to be held at London KOKO on Oct 22 with the motto "Bohemians and Revolutionaries", and "very special guests" (we wonder who that could be) are expected to headline the night. Also playing are the brilliant M.A.S.S., who have already supported The Libertines several times. Tickets are available from Ticketweb for 15 pounds, or at the door for 18 pounds (but we'd recommend buying early to avoid disappointment!).

Meanwhile, in another part of Albion...

Babyshambles have cancelled the remaining dates of their UK tour. A spokesperson: "Due to a very heavy touring schedule and the constant pressure and continued harassment from outside sources, the band have unfortunately made the decision to cancel the shows this weekend in Norwich (Oct 14), Coventry (15) and London's KOKO (16 Oct)". Refunds will be made from point of purchase. The German dates in November seem not to be affected by this decision. The German dates are:

Oct 09 - Munich, Muffathalle
Oct 11 - Berlin, Columbiaclub

Tickets are available at karsten-jahnke.de for about 23 (!) €.

Other Babyshambles news: the artwork for "Down in Albion", the debut album due to be released on Nov 14, has been revealed. It is very... erm... basic, don't you think? (The price tag, btw, is not part of the original artwork, as you might have guessed...)

Flying splice!

As reported on thelibertines.org.uk, Carl finally announced who will be the chosen ones to play in his new (still unnamed) band. Apart from our favourite lionheart-drummer Gary and our favourite damned personal Anthony, there's also a celebrity bass player. Says Carl: "I am proud to announce that our new bass player is none other than than the justly acclaimed Didz Hammond, formerly of The Cooper Temple Clause. He has never shown anything but love, compassion and talent from the off." Sadly, this means that Team Cooper are a member short right now... we're not sure yet whether to cry over the Didz-era-Coopers or be happy about this new dream line-up. We'll let you know once we find out.

Stalking Peter Doherty

tomorrow, 10pm Channel 4 will show Max Carlish’s documentary titled "Stalking Peter Doherty". Some time back in april Peter & Alan Wass (Left Hand) were arrested at London's Rookery hotel, for suspicion of assault and robbery. Max Carlish who put together the documentary had to be taken to hospital where he received treatment for a black eye. Carlish had filmed Peter smoking heroin, when he was still with The Libertines.

Gigs, gigs, gigs!

With the Libertines it's like with the Hydra monster from Greek mythology - you know, the one that grows two new heads for every head chopped off. You should be happy kittens if you live in England. There's a whole bunch of new Yeti & Babyshambles gigs confirmed.

First off, Yeti are playing The Griffin in 93 Leonard Street, London, TOMORROW, Saturday April 30. It is a FREE gig, doors open early afternoon even though Yeti are due onstage not before 8 pm. First come first served, so you should come early enough to get in.

The weekend after, on Sunday, May 08, Yeti are headlining the "Sunglasses and Crowd Surfing" festival at Cargo, 83 Rivington St. Shoreditch, London. Yeti are due on stage at 10.45 m, but there's a load of bands from 1 pm already, and they are surely worth checking out. For 12 pounds you'll be able to see, among others, 10,000 Things, The Rocks, New Rhodes, ... . Tickets in advance only from http://www.ticketweb.co.uk . More info for both gigs on the official Yeti website.

Babyshambles, meanwhile, are confirmed for a few festivals. Which are:

May 28 - Homelands Festival
June 25 - Glastonbury Festival, Left Field Stage
June 30 - O2 Wireless Music Festival, Main Stage

Pete is also going to take part in a special gig for Love Music Hate Racism. The campaign to fight the British National Party is going to take place on Sunday, May 1, in Trafalgar Square, London. Bands will play in between speaches. More info at the LMHR website.

Bigmouth strikes again... and again and again...

Oh dear... Liam Gallagher STILL thinks people care what he says. Here's what he has to say about Pete:

“I’m not into smackheads. Smackheads need slaps… So what does the word Libertine mean? What does it mean? Freedom? He’s fucking in the corner doing smack with a helmet on his head! There’s nothing free about that. It’s nasty, innit? If the kids like them, fair enough, but they’re nowhere near like us. The music’s rubbish for start”.

For more random tries to offend, click through to nme.com.

Show off shoes

Show me your shoes and I'll tell you who you are. Taking into considerations that at their recent meetup Pete & Carl praised each others shoes, it just seems right to us to direct you to a "shoe blog" run by Helen. It has pics of celebrity shoes, and our Carl also has his chaussure displayed. Click here for Helen's fabulous site.

Updates and such

Apologies to everyone who was disappointed by not finding any news updates on this site for the last two months. We've been a bit busy, but we'll try to udate regularly from now on again. A big "SORRY!" also to everyone who emailed us and didn't get a reply - yes, we're an unreliable bunch of sleepyheads.

You'll know all about what happened in the last few months anyway, we suppose. All about Babyshambles losing one & winning another member, about Pete's "getting poetical" (as if he hadn't always been!), about Carl signing a solo deal, about Yeti making the Top 40 with their debut single, and of course about Pete & Carl meeting up (wahey!) and complementing each other about their shoes. If you don't know about it, then just go to our press section, where we tried to record the most imortant articles from the last few weeks. More to come soon... (anything we missed? Email us any press clippings you might have and want to see online to libertines_de@yahoo.co.uk

Picture archive

We're also working on revaming our picture archive (yes, still!). And since we are greedy, we want YOUR pics for that archive. So if you have any shots of any Babyshambles/Chavs/Yeti/Carl gigs/appearances, don't hesitate to send them over to libertines.de . Really, we'd love you to... and we know you do, too :-D

I just don't know what to do with myself...

Pete's all over the place again. All over the yellow press, that is. We hate reporting about what The Sun, The Mirror, The Daily Mail, The Cadswallop Cabbage think is so sensational that they want to feed on it till kingdom come. Thus, we just don't do it. If you want to know about what Pete did next, check our press/articles section. You'll find all the... erm... "suggested reading" there.

Hope of deliverance?

Meanwhile, in an interview with billboard.com, Gary said that the Libertines were just taking a break before reforming for the summer festivals, and a new album was planned for 2005 or early 2006. If this will be with or without Pete remains to be seen. Says Gary:
"We've done two summers of tours without [Doherty]. And, I might add, the performances were kind of OK. But it's still [up to] Pete as well, and that's where that 'but' kind of fits in for me."

So rejoice, oh libertines and libertinettes, for all is not lost. In order to read the whole article, click through to billboard.com. Thanks a lot to Manuel for the link!

Yeti gigs again

Yeti have added a new date to their February tour. They will now play the Fever in Wigan on Feb 10th. The planned support slot for Razorlight in London's Alexandra Palce on Feb 12 will NOT happen, as Razorlight had to cancel their tour. The date is to be rescheduled. On that day, Yeti are now playing the Wharf Bar in Walsall instead. Also, Yeti are to support The Concretes at their NME Awards Show @ Camden Koko on Feb 18th. Tickets are availabe via the NME ticketline. For a complete list of Yeti dates, check our live section.

Have you been to a Yeti gig lately? And taken any pics? Or bootlegged the show? Or managed to get hold of a strand of John's hair? Email them to libertines.de if you want us to put them online.

Carl's health

As reported on nme.com, Carl has to undergo an operation to get removed a tumour behind his ear. Luckily, the tumour isn't malignant. But no loud music for two months, Carl? Libertines.de wishes all the best.

Carl about Libertines split

In the same nme.com news story, Carl speaks about the way the Libertines split, and about his future. Excerpts:

"I’d like to have (played a tour of Britain)," he said, "but the reason I didn’t was because I didn’t want to upset Peter, really. I didn’t want to rub it in his face. I believe I’ve done the right thing. I hope he understands it. Of course I’d have loved to play Britain. I’m English… contrary to popular belief! I love the British crowds. I feel a loyalty, affinity and unity with him whatever plight he seems to have been trudged through."

Of his immediate future plans, Barat said: "I’m going to tie up my loose ends, deal with some demons and follow my ridiculous drive to find what’s previously been embodied in the word Arcadia. I shan’t rest until I find it. So I have to find a home, go to it, take stock and try and understand what this has all been about."

He added: "I intend to contact Peter. I’d like to embrace him on a level of friendship and maybe…. I don’t want him thinking I’m avoiding him… I want him to remember I love him. I get upset when he says things (to the media) that make me sad. I read it. And he knows I read it. I feel nothing evil towards Peter. I get angry sometimes but I know better than to spread it to the rumour mill and the gossipers, like some kind of virus."

Pete on Newsnight

For anyone who missed Pete on Newsnight, you can now download the interview from http://www.funland.nildram.co.uk/libs/. Oh Pete...

"I'll boob him one on his hooter"

from contactmusic.com:

Pete Doherty (ex member of The Libertines) threatens Morrissey with violence

Troubled rocker PETE DOHERTY vows to enact violent revenge on his hero MORRISSEY, after the former SMITHS icon refused to shake his hand.

Doherty - who was thrown out of THE LIBERTINES for failing to conquer his drug addictions - was devastated when Morrissey reportedly announced the British band are superior without the destructive heroin user, and refused to meet him.

Doherty now fronts BABYSHAMBLES and is threatening to physically attack Morrissey if he ever sees him again.

He says, "When I went to shake his hand he sort of did a rude boy shuffle. Apparently he said The Libertines are better off without me.

"How does that feel? Horrid. Next time I see him I'll boob him one on his hooter."

NME Libertines feature

This week's NME (the one with Franz Ferdinand on the cover) apparantly has a 5-page Libertines feature. We haven't checked it out yet so we'd better not tell you it's a must-have, but if anyone feels like sending us scans of the article, we definitely wouldn't boob you one on your hooter ;-) Email away: libertines_de@yahoo.co.uk

A riot of my own...

The Babyshambles tour ended with a oh so riotous riot when Babyshambles didn't turn up for their gig at the London Astoria on Dec 18. About 150-200 people tried to vent their anger by invading the stage and trying to destroy the band's equipment. Kids, this is not rock'n'roll. However, if you feel like it, read more about it here.

Baby, what a shambles part 203,468,268

Yesterday's Babyshambles gig at the Coventry Colosseum had to be stopped during the first song due to the barrier crashing. That's how ecstatic you lot are! Luckily, noone was hurt badly so the show could go ahead twenty minutes later. Read about this on the NME website.

Also on nme.com there's a review of the Graham Coxon gig at the London Forum last Saturday which saw a special appearance of Peter for the encore, a version of "Timr for Heroes" (which Coxon recently covered on Jo Whiley's).

Last chance honey...

As you might well be aware, our time with the Libertines is running out. Seems like your last chance to see them live will be in Paris on Dec 17th. The Libs will appear together with PJ Harvey and will - after playing their own set - perform a cover version with her. The gig is organized by the Paris Metro, and the venue is top secret and will only be txted to people with tickets (who, as far as we know, are just as hard to obtain).

Babyshamles single download

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow will be your last chance of downloading the new Babyshambles single "Killamangiro" on the Rough Trade website. The download costs 99p or 1.99 pounds if you pay via txt msg. You can also watch the video to the single on the site.

Nothing lasts forever

from nme.com:

CARL BARAT plans to split THE LIBERTINES at the end of the year if PETE DOHERTY doesn’t clean up and rejoin the band.

The star is currently working on plans for what he’d do if Doherty is either too unwell or unwilling to rejoin The Libertines this year. The group aren’t planning any more tours or studio time beyond December, putting the band on ice for the "foreseeable future". Band sources have told NME.COM the decision is tantamount to splitting The Libertines, but with Carl leaving the door open for a reunion if Pete is ever well enough.

Speaking last week, Carl told NME.COM that he’s working on new songs, has a new found confidence and is considering either going solo or rehearsing musicians for a new group next year. It’s likely that any new band would feature some members of The Libertines.

Carl told NME: "As of the end of December Gary, John and I have decided The Libertines will be off the road for the foreseeable future, no more official gigs are booked. An ongoing problem with my health, which requires an operation, will put me out of action for maybe some months. My position with Pete hasn’t changed, I hope he gets better, I still love him and hope he will come back in full health and take the world with The Libertines and put the Albion back on-course. Joining the old crew on the good ship wouldn’t be so hard."

He continued: "I'm gonna have to do something different for a bit. I've got a lot of songs written, I don't know if that means getting a splendid top-hole band together or just going off and recording [them]. So I’m going to go and do that for a bit.

"I do put a rather stoic brave face on which is hard to maintain sometimes. I don’t always believe that’s how I feel behind it. But right now I feel like I’ve got more focus about what I do in the future than ever before. And I’ve found confidence and faith in my writing. So I feel a bit more positive."

Carl said that he still hopes more than anything for a reunion with a fit and healthy Pete, but he can’t see it happening in the immediate future. He told NME.COM: "My heart, of course, is with The Libertines. In its original line-up… To be honest, I’ve not been that close to what’s going on (The Libertines have been touring the US). The pictures [of Pete] sadden me. I don’t feel he’s well at the moment.

"I don’t know if [The Libertines will] ever be quite the same but I don’t see why they’d be any less valid or why we’d have any less purpose or conviction or relevance if we did get back together. Of course I’d love to. But I’m not going to rest on my laurels waiting for Pete to decide if he’s going to stop taking drugs... I’ve got things that I need to get out my system in song right now and I’ve got some other work to do."[...]

There are no plans to release a third single from ‘The Libertines’. However, Carl has been in the studio with the band Client, having co-written their new single ‘Pornography’ which is released on January 10, 2005.

Alan McGee, manager of The Libertines said: "There are no limitations to Carl’s songwriting talent or musical adaptability. The most probable way forward under the current conditions of the Libertines will be to do many co write projects and various guest appearances.

”I have never known Carl more confident musically than he is at the moment. A great Carl Barat solo album or as yet unnamed band featuring current members of the Libertines awaits sometime in late 2005. To me 'Pornography' sounds like Carl and Client have written a great Cure type of single.

If there is going to be life after the Libertines, then Carl Barat's journey is certainly going to be an interesting one."

No more Libertourines?

from nme.com:

CARL BARAT is to retire THE LIBERTINES from playing live for "the foreseeable future" at the end of the year, NME.COM can exclusively reveal. [...]

Speaking exclusively to NME.COM yesterday (November 1), singer Carl Barat said that from December there are no more plans for gigs – the strongest hint yet that the band will split for good unless Doherty cleans up and rejoins.

He said: "As of the end of December Gary, John and I have decided The Libertines will be off the road for the foreseeable future, no more official gigs are booked. An ongoing problem with my health, which requires an operation, will put me out of action for maybe some months.

"My position with Pete hasn’t changed, I hope he gets better, I still love him and hope he will come back in full health and take the world with The Libertines and put the Albion back on-course. Joining the old crew on the good ship wouldn’t be so hard."

Meanwhile in Shamblesland...

Babyshambles have announced new tour dates, including one in Ireland:

Belfast Limelight (December 11)
Dublin Village (12)
London Forum (13)
Glasgow Barrowlands (14)
Blackpool Empress Ballroom (15)

Tickets are on sale from today!
